Pomposa Abbey

One of the most distinguished Benedictine monasteries of the Middle Ages

The Basilica, Refectory, Chapter House and Court constitute the heart of the abbey. These were later joined by the majestic bell tower.

The Benedictines founded the abbey in the 7th century AD. Around the year 1000, the abbey enjoyed great prestige in the region and the role of abbot was held in high esteem. The Benedictines remained there until the early 16th century, when the entire monastic family moved to Ferrara.

It became private property and then a farm, until a century ago it was turned into a national monument by the state. The complex was visited throughout the centuries by various famous people, including Barbarossa and Dante Alighieri.

The architecture is a cross between Romanesque and Byzantine styles, and elements of both the Ferrarese and Bolognese schools can be recognized in the works of art.
